We recently encountered an error in Microsoft Azure when trying to set up a subscription. Our business account was linked to client accounts as a Directory, but we didn’t have any products associated with our account. In attempting to create a new subscription under our business account, we encountered a “We were unable to find your Azure tenant” error. Finding no helpful documentation on the issue, and getting unreliable assistance from Microsoft support, we thought we’d share what we were able to do to fix the problem.
If you’re in the situation we were in, the root cause is that the domain on your account is an unmanaged domain (tenant). The solution is to perform an Admin Takeover of the domain via DNS verification. To do that:
- Navigate to Microsoft Power BI and go through the process to sign up via “Start Free.” At this point you may be able to simply log in using your existing credentials.
- From there, once you’re signed up, sign into the Office 365 Admin center using those credentials set up before.
- If you aren’t already prompted to “Become the admin” then select the menu icon in the top left of the screen, and go to “Admin.” Once there, you should finally be prompted to start the “Become the admin” takeover process. Follow the on-screen instructions, which will include configuring a TXT entry in the DNS for the domain you wish to take ownership of.
- Once the process is complete and the domain is verified, you should be able to navigate back to Azure and continue with the process; you should now have a registered, verified Azure tenant.
